Tom Holland's first swing as Spider-Man will end Sunday as Sony's second-highest opening of all time. The $117 million figure is the second largest in Sony Pictures history, behind "Spider-Man 3". Without the newly forged ties to Marvel's multi-year juggernaut, it's hard to say what the reception would look like for the latest fresh take on Spider-Man.

Though the Vulture was marketed as the main antagonist of Spider-Man: Homecoming, there were actually a handful of villains introduced like the two Shockers as well as the Tinkerer.

The movie sees actor Tom Holland once again step into the role of Peter Parker in this post-Captain America: Civil War film, which sees the young web-slinging hero attempt to serve as a hero and earn his way into the Avengers by proving himself to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), while also balancing schoolwork and friendships. Also featured in the movie are Donald Glover, Martin Starr, and Hannibal Burress.

Among holdovers, Universal and Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me 3 fell to second place with $34 million from 4,535 theaters for a 10-day domestic total of $149.2 million and global tally well north of $300 million. This weekend it's expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations. Tom Holland's performance in Spider-man: Homecoming has been praised nearly universally by the critics and the film too has received rave reviews across the spectrum.

In third is Edgar Wright's latest film, Baby Driver, which sees only a 38 percent drop for estimated earning of $12.7 million.

"Homecoming" is landing a $120 million weekend.

It also didn't hurt that the rest of the releases this weekend weren't major, so the rest of the top earners were in their second weekends. -D.C. Comics release "Wonder Woman".

And among other superhero movies, "Wonder Woman" moved past the fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film to become the fourth-biggest film of the year worldwide, at $745.8 million. It went on to gross $335 million at home and a further $555 million overseas for a total haul of $890 million.

Transformers: The Last Knight rounded out the top five in its third weekend, delivering $6.3 million and pushing its domestic total to just shy of $120 million.
