England look to 'positive' Root against South Africa

South Africa's Quinton de Kock bats during the third day of the first Test match between England and South Africa at Lord's Cricket Ground in central London England Vs South Africa, 1st Test: Joe Root rescued England with unbeaten 184

The visitors reply got off to a bad start when Heino Kuhn made just one before edging a Broad delivery to first slip, and former captain Alastair Cook made no mistake with the catch.

But an undaunted Broad, who made his Test-best 169 against Pakistan at Lord's in 2010, struck shots worthy of his father Chris, the former England opener.

Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad made telling contributions with bat and ball to leave England in charge of the first Test against South Africa after Day 2 on Friday.

Hashim Amla hit two crisp fours from Ben Stokes' first two balls in the game, but Stokes then personified England's day by dragging it back and only going for another 5 runs in his next 5 overs.

The tall fast bowler then doubled up with the wicket of Liam Dawson, lbw for a second-ball duck in his second Test, before Moeen and Broad took over. Elgar followed his England counterpart in leading the way with the bat but Broad and Moeen winkled out a wicket apiece during the middle session.

De Kock repelled England's initial advances with a 36-ball fifty before a battling knock from Philander prevented South Africa's first innings from being completely subsumed.

James Anderson was the last man out for 12, edging Morkel behind after sharing a 45-run last-wicket partnership.

This was his third six in Test cricket but his first against a pace bowler.

It was Broad's first Test fifty in four years and his most fluent innings at this level since he was hit in the face by a bouncer from Varun Aaron at Old Trafford in 2014.

South Africa too will have a new captain in Dean Elgar but regular skipper Faf du Plessis is expected back for the second Test at Nottingham following the birth of his first child.

South Africa paceman Kagiso Rabada dismissed Ali (bowled for 87) and Mark Wood (lbw 0) in the space of three balls but Broad continued his assault, smashing Morkel for successive sixes to bring up his half-century.

Root could add only six more to his overnight score before Morkel had him caught behind pushing forward.

JP Duminy and Theunis de Bruyn were also casualties as South Africa ended day two on 214-5, over 200 runs behind England.

No South African batsmen was able to get away from them as Joe Root did on day one.

"He's a phenomenal talent", said Philander of Rabada, whose 17 Tests have already yielded 71 wickets.
