Sources say ten Egyptian soldiers including one colonel were killed on Friday in a suicide bomb attack on an army checkpoint in northern Sinai.

Egyptian guards patrol the border with Gaza at military checkpoints.

A suicide vehicle bomber reportedly targeted a checkpoint outside Rafah, a border town near the Gaza Strip, before dozens of gunmen opened fire.

While Daesh has claimed attacks outside Sinai, a number of lesser known groups have also conducted bombings and assassinations in the capital and the Nile Delta.

"In the face of the unsafe implications of terrorism and extremism of all kinds for the security and stability of states and the serious threat to global peace and security, Tunis is reiterating its call for the worldwide community to join efforts and intensify coordination to overcome it and snuff out its sources", the statement said. The military put the casualties lower, and said the attacks had killed and injured a total of 26 soldiers, but did not provide a breakdown of the figure.

Masked militants then continued the assault on foot.

At least 17 soldiers were killed, according to an official tally.

The April attacks prompted President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to declare a nationwide state of emergency like that already in force in North Sinai.

"A vehicle broke into an army checkpoint in the village of Al-Bars, south of Rafah", the source said.

An army spokesman said, however, that government forces killed 40 militants who. On his page, al-Rifai posted photographs of allegedly slain militants dressed in military uniforms. It did not name their affiliation. Reports indicate that the military was forced to abandon the checkpoint, at least temporarily.

But over the past months, ISIS has focused its attacks on Egypt's Christian minority.

Responding to the Sinai attack, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail stressed in a statement the need for countries to unite in order to combat countries supporting terrorism and to "dry up their sources of funding", an apparent reference to Qatar.
