Red Cross calls for blood donations during 'critical' shortage

Red Cross calls for donations amid blood shortage Critical Blood Shortage Prompts American Red Cross' Emergency Call For Donors

The Red Cross is issuing an emergency call for blood and platelet donors of all blood types.

Over the last two months, there have been approximately 61,000 fewer donations than needed, causing a serious problem for the Red Cross blood supply.

To put it in perspective, the shortfall is equivalent to the organization not collecting any blood donations for more than four days. Below are a number of blood donation opportunities in the Chicago area from July 5-25. One of the reasons people admit to never giving blood is their fear of needles - a fear that many Red Cross donors have overcome. American Red Cross CEO Celena Roldan joined ABC7 to talk about the blood shortage.

"Blood can't be manufactured", said Mauger. Almost 700 fewer blood drives are scheduled during the Independence Day week than the weeks before and after the holiday.

"I like to say even though you may take a vacation, the need for blood doesn't", said Mauger.

Those interested in donating can make an appointment at the redcrossblood.org or at 1-800-733-2767.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive.

Donation appointments are encouraged to reduce possible wait times at blood donation sites. The website also is a good resource for information about how to prepare for a blood donation and it answers questions about whether people are eligible to donate, he said.
