The female bombers are reported to have hid among residents fleeing the city and then detonated their vests hidden underneath their burkas at various military and civilian targets. Federal police units recaptured the last escape route for the Islamic State - a bridge over the Tigris River - on Saturday.

"In some areas, the enemy has used for the last three days of suicide bombers, including women", said the lieutenant Sami al-Aridhi, a commander of the iraqi special forces (CTS).

Using women as suicide bombers is apparently the latest tactic by the militants, Sergeant Ali Abdullah Hussein said as he returned from the front line in Mosul's Old City, his troops carrying the body of their killed comrade wrapped in a blanket.

Major General Najim al-Jubouri, commander of Nineveh province's Operations Command, said the maximum deadline will be on Thursday.

USA -backed forces continued squeezing ISIS militants in Mosul's Old City through the weekend.

Iraqi forces began their push to retake the Old City in mid-June.

However, the recovery of Mosul will not mark the end of the war against the AE, who still control several areas in Iraq and Syria.

While Iraqi commanders predicted final victory in Mosul this week, us -backed Syrian Democratic Forces announced they had begun an assault on Islamic State's Syrian redoubt in the Old City of Raqqa. "Victory in the western part will be announced soon". It is where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced its caliphate nearly three years ago. As the forces closed in, the militants blew the mosque up along with its famed leaning minaret.

"The end of the battle shall be between five days and a week", said Mr Aridhi. But Washington says it has no information to corroborate such reports and Iraqi officials are also skeptical.

An estimated 600 civilians are still trapped inside the city.

"Praise be to God, we managed to liberate [Mosul] and proved the others were wrong, the people of Mosul supported and stood with our security forces against terrorism", Abadi said.

"The well-being of civilians is a matter of extreme concern for us".

The U.S. Central Command said the coalition conducted targeted strikes on two "small portions" of the Rafiqah Wall, allowing the fighters "to advance into the most heavily fortified portion" of the city.

"There are at least 30 ISIS terrorists in my neighborhood". The city, located some 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad, fell to Daesh in June 2014. News could not verify these accounts.
