Sony and Panasonic rolled out new record players a year ago, while Lawson HMV has opened three Tokyo stores specializing in records since 2014.

The Japanese tech giant stopped making vinyl records in 1989, with cassettes and compact discs dominating the market at that time.

Traditional LPs are now so popular that they account for 15 per cent of the record industry's income from physical album sales.

At one time, the format had been expected to disappear after the rise of CDs, digital downloads and streaming.

Since Japan has only one active record manufacturer - Toyokasei - supply often can not keep up with demand, and many new releases are often offered in only limited quantities, according to Sony Music.

The surge in popularity of vinyl has been widely reported in recent years, with the format attracting older, nostalgic buyers as well as younger people.

Sony has been scrambling to find older engineers familiar with how to make records, said the Nikkei newspaper in Japan.

Sony did not say what music it will release in record format.

According to stats physical music sales represented 73% of total record industry revenues in Japan past year.

Past year the United Kingdom, vinyl records generated more revenue than advertising-backed tiers of streaming platforms.
