111 people died under California's new right-to-die law

End-of-life prescription drugs taken by 111 Californians last year State: 111 terminally ill end lives under new California law

The data was part of the California Department of Public Health's first report on the law since it went into effect June 9, 2016. Between then and December 31 of past year, "191 individuals received aid-in-dying drugs under the EOLA, and 111 people died following ingestion of the prescribed drugs", writes the California Department of Public Health. Of the 111 individuals, 87.4 percent were more than 60 years of age, 96.4 percent were insured and 83.8 percent were receiving hospice and/or palliative care. If the lethal drugs are prescribed, the person can still decide whether to take them, but they are required to administer them without assistance.

90 percent of the patients who died were white, and 58 percent had attained a bachelor's degree or higher. The outcomes of 59 others who received the prescriptions were not reported by their doctors within the six-month period, according to the report.

The Times reported that physician-assisted deaths made up six out of every 10,000 deaths in California between June and December 2016, much lower than the 2016 rate in OR, where lethal prescriptions accounted for 37 per 10,000 deaths.

The terminal patient also has to give their doctor a written request for the lethal prescription and make two oral requests at least 15 days apart.

State officials warn that people should be cautious in drawing hasty conclusions from this report, as it only covers six months of data.

A total of 173 doctors filled out prescriptions for the life-ending drugs.

"Basically it mirrors the experience in Oregon", Burkin said.

California became the fifth state in the nation to pass such a law.

But the California's law gained momentum after Brittany Maynard, who moved from California to Oregon, where she could legally die with medication prescribed under the Oregon Death With Dignity Act.
