Burling, Team New Zealand reach match point in America's Cup

Oracle Team USA skippered by Jimmy Spithill in action racing against Emirates Team New Zealand Watch: Nearly blind and gassy – meet Martha – officially the world's ugliest dog

"And by the end of the first upwind leg Emirates Team New Zealand led by 32".

Burling steered them to a pair of comfortable wins over Oracle Team USA yesterday and was thrilled with the way the Kiwis recovered after losing their first race to the defenders on Saturday.

Sailing professor Mark Orams joined Larry Williams to discuss how both teams are looking ahead of tomorrow's racing.

"They haven't handed over the trophy yet".

New Zealand have not lost a race after leading to the first mark and lost their only race yesterday after trailing early.

Spithill, one of the world's most successful sailors, said it was too soon to say what he or the US team would do next.

NZ are two wins from winning the America's Cup after a super display in race seven. "We're in a tough situation now".

Although the New Zealand team got away, the champions recovered well and fought their way back into the race, finding the speed which had evaded them in previous encounters.

New Zealand then displayed masterful control of their innovative cycle-powered boat, foiling all the way around the course en route to a 30-second win.

Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill says he's prepared to hand over the helm.

Compounding his problems, Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill took his ACC boat over the boundary up the third beat in an attempt to find some way back, incurring a two-boat length penalty in the process.

One certainty for the other teams thinking of the next campaign is that Italy's Luna Rossa, which is backed by the Italian luxury goods group Prada, has been chosen as the Challenger of Record for the 36th America's Cup.

"We're just going to keep pushing forward, keep trying to improve, keep trying to learn".

"The plan certainly wasn't to be in this position again, I can assure you of that, but we are here now so it is up to all of us to respond and react".

Helmsman Peter Burling ensured there would be no signs of relenting after Team New Zealand moved to the cusp of securing the America's Cup on Monday (NZT).

"I had my head up for that manoeuvre, we were coming down on them pretty hard and really quickly". Spithill and his crew did everything they could to stop the leaderboard ticking round to five - one to Emirates Team New Zealand, reducing the deficit to 13 seconds at the sixth gate, but they were unable to bridge the gap completely and that left the Kiwis celebrating victory in race seven.

"We thought we would be able to pull a maneuver off but clearly we couldn't, it was a big mistake", admitted Spithill on the poor pre-start.

Spithill said there was a quick crew meeting after Race 8 and he was pleased that the sailors kept their composure.

The win stopped U.S. momentum in its tracks after they won theirfirst win of the series on Saturday.

The New Zealand crew had been on a mission to wipe out the hurt inflicted when an 8-1 lead was overhauled by the US team.
