A New England Compounding Center pharmacist convicted of racketeering for his role in a deadly meningitis outbreak in 2012 will serve nine years in prison, a MA federal judge ruled Monday.

Investigators linked the cases to the New England Compounding Center, housed inside a squat brick building in Framingham, Mass., and said there were untested and nonsterile drugs as well as expired ingredients.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traced outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections in 20 states to contaminated injections of medical steroids, given mainly to people with back pain.

That includes 76 people who died, prosecutors said.

In a filing on June 22, the prosecution placed the number of deaths caused by Cadden at 76, making it the deadliest meningitis outbreak in USA history. He was convicted of racketeering and fraud but was able to beat charges of second-degree murder.

"As head of a company that made drugs that killed and sickened these people, I say with full sincerity that it breaks my heart to read about how painful their deaths were", he said. He was the co-founder and president of the New England Compounding Center.

"His actions have caused my life to be shattered and my family so much pain", said Rachelle Shuff, of Elkhart, Indiana, who received steroid shots for back pain while trying to recover from serious injuries she received in a auto accident.

Despite being aware of the unsafe conditions in which the steroids were made, Cadden still pushed through with the shipment of some 17,000 vials of the product, the prosecutors said.

Barry Cadden, 50, of Wrentham, Massachusetts, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns to serve 108 months in prison and three years of supervised release, and forfeiture and restitution in an amount to be determined later. Cadden is set to be sentenced on Monday, June 26, in a deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak that killed more than 60 people and sickened hundreds more.

"I thank God for all the people who cared for me and who thought about me", Rethlake said.

The co-founder of a MA compounding pharmacy is set to be sentenced in a deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak that killed more than 60 people and sickened hundreds more. He was previously acquitted of second-degree murder charges.

On Monday she will go in front of a federal judge in Boston to tell the court how losing Lyn Laperriere has impacted her and her family.

Barry Cadden, president of the New England Compounding Center, followed by members of his legal team, arrive at the federal courthouse for sentencing Monday, June 26, 2017, in Boston.

Prosecutors are likely to request Cadden spend 35 years in prison, reports the Associated Press.
