Alex Jones interview draws 3.5 million viewers

The Hollywood Reporter's 25th Annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast in Los Angeles Jones Short on Straight Answers in Kelly Interview

In spite of the significant amount of advance news coverage of the Alex Jones interview on this week's edition of "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" on NBC, the show was not a success with viewers.

Kelly's first episode came out high, averaging 6.2 million viewers, while her second episode dipped down to 3.6 million viewers and was dwarfed by competitor 60 Minutes.

She has defended her decision by noting that his influence has grown with the rise of President Donald Trump, who has praised Jones and appeared on his radio program.

Kelly has been criticized intensely for giving a platform to Jones, who has also called the September 11 attacks an inside job and promoted the false story that a pizza place in Washington, D.C. was the site of a child sex ring. But he continued to express doubts, saying that he looked at footage of children leaving the building and thought it looked like a "drill". In the interview, Jones never gave a direct answer when Kelly pressed him to admit he was wrong and continued to raise questions about the shootings.

"Some of it looks like it's real but then what do you do when they've got the kids going in circles in and out of the building with their hands up". "Some thought we shouldn't broadcast this interview because his baseless allegations aren't just offensive, they're unsafe", Kelly said.

Lawyers representing 12 people who lost loved ones in the 2012 shooting pleaded on the victims' behalf with NBC not to air the interview with Jones.

"I tend to believe that children probably did die there".

Megyn Kelly's Alex Jones interview was more uneventful than its actual content previously suggested. "Over the last few days, we have listened intently to Sandy Hook parents [and] considered the deep emotions from the wounds of that day that have yet to heal", she wrote.

Jones dubbed the interview as "fake news" before it even aired, and started releasing secretly recording recordings with Kelly in an attempt to show her dishonesty in the process. NBC News Chairman Andy Lack told The Associated Press that the Jones story would be edited with its critics in mind.

Long-running CBS newsmagazine "60 Minutes" easily beat out the former Fox New anchor with 5.3 million viewers, even though the story selection was hardly at attention-grabbing - the program ran stories on first responders in war-torn Syria, chess-playing teens in rural MS and how small, cash-starved countries are effectively selling citizenship for revenue.

Megyn Kelly's much talked about interview with Alex Jones got plenty of attention for Kelly and NBC, both good and bad, but not many viewers.
