US President Donald Trump has confirmed he's being investigated for his role in firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, calling the probe a "witch hunt".

Trump did not identify "the man" but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No. 2 official who appointed Mueller on May 17, supervises the probe and wrote a memo to Trump critical of Comey that preceded Comey's firing. Some of his ire is aimed at Rosenstein and investigative special counsel Robert Mueller, both of whom the president believes are biased against him, associates say.

The New York Times sued the FBI on Friday, seeking a court's help in getting the agency to turn over documents created by fired FBI Director James Comey after his conversations with President Donald Trump. The Washington Post reported Mueller may be interested in a meeting in which Trump allegedly urged Rogers and Coats to convince Comey to back off the probe into ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional panels are investigating the Russian Federation issue, which has cast a shadow over the early months of Trump's presidency.

The memo, which threatens criminal prosecution for failure to comply, was issued the same day it was revealed Vice President Mike Pence retained a criminal lawyer to represent him in the multiple ongoing investigations. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet.

CNN, however, referenced an unnamed "person familiar with Trump's tweet" who said the president was referring to news reports claiming he is under investigation for obstructing justice.

At this point, one wonders if there's going to be anyone left in federal government who isn't somehow tainted by the Russian Federation stench, even if it only involves one penned memo.

Trump had previously boasted that he was not personally under investigation, and Comey said the president had repeatedly pressured him to publicly clear him.

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story".

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) responded to President Donald Trump's freaky Friday statement that appeared to confirm he's the subject of an obstructive of justice investigation, urging Congress to take precautions against any presidential interference.

Mr. Mueller's investigation appeared to be reaching a circle of current and former officials.

Trump "believes that he has the power to fire anyone in government he chooses and for any reason", said Representative Adam Schiff, whose committee is also investigating Russia-Trump ties.

Mueller's investigation also includes the question of whether Trump tried to obstruct justice.
