Habs trade Nathan Beaulieu to Buffalo

Acquired by Sabres Sabres acquire Habs defenseman Beaulieu for third-round pick

The Buffalo Sabres have acquired defenseman Nathan Beaulieu from the Montreal Canadiens.

Beaulieu is viewed by analysts as an upgrade to the Sabres D-corps with his size along with his ability to skate and move the puck. Beaulieu had started the season in Montreal's top pair alongside Shea Weber.

The Canadiens will receive Buffalo's third-round pick (No. 68 overall) in next week's draft as part of the deal, which was announced Saturday.

Following this trade, the Sabres still have seven picks in the 2017 NHL Draft in the following rounds: 1st, 2nd, 2nd (from Minnesota), 3rd (from Washington), 4th, 6th and 7th. Opportunity knocked for him last season but according to a June 13 article by Joey Aliferi of Pro Hockey Talk, "Expectations were high, but things definitely didn't work out as planned".

This comes with a roster freeze taking place today at 3 PM before the expansion and National Hockey League drafts taking place later this week. Bogosian has three years left on his contract with a $5.14 million cap-hit while Gorges has one year at $3.9 million.
