Qahar Aram, spokesman for the Afghan army's 209 Shaheen Corps told Stars and Stripes that an Afghan special forces soldier started shooting at foreign forces in the afternoon.

The incident took place during a training exercise at around 2 p.m. local time at Camp Shaheen in Mazar-e-Sharif.

If confirmed as an incident among joint forces, it would mark the second time in a week that members of allied Afghan troops opened fire on US counterparts.

At least one Afghan soldier was killed and another wounded, the us official said. This is the second insider attack in a week.

The Resolute Support mission announced on its Twitter feed that seven USA service members were wounded but said there were no US fatalities.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid praised the attack in a statement sent to the media.

The NATO-led mission said it has opened an investigation.

The gunman - an Afghan - had been shot and killed, the spokesman said.

Earlier this month, a convoy carrying U.S. and Afghan forces was struck by a roadside bomb and came under small arms fire.

Green-on-blue attacks have been a major problem during NATO's long years fighting alongside Afghan forces. US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday he would present options on Afghanistan to President Donald Trump "very soon". "More information will be provided as it becomes available".

The injured troops have been evacuated for treatment, the mission said in a statement.
