Foster will nearly certainly ask for greater investment in Northern Ireland as part of the deal, as well as guarantees on support for pension plans and for winter fuel allowances for older people.

"The talks are continuing but I think the events in London today probably will have some impact on that".

A Downing Street source added the talks had been "constructive" but refused to put a timescale on when they would conclude.

"That's certainly something I will emphasise in any contacts I have with Prime Minister May", he said.

At least six people died and dozens were injured when a massive fire tore through a 24-storey London apartment block overnight, a fresh blow to the capital less than two weeks after the London Bridge terror attack.

"There is a unity of objective among people in the United Kingdom", May said following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Brexit minister David Davis has insisted the approach to the European Union divorce has not changed, but May has recognized that a broader consensus needs to be built for Brexit and has made clear she would listen to all wings of the party on the issue. His comments come amid a diplomatic offensive involving Germany, France and EU officials to force the prime minister to rethink or soften her intentions to leave the single market and Europe's customs union.

Former prime minister David Cameron, who called last year's European Union referendum and resigned after losing it, told a conference in Poland that "there will be pressure for a softer Brexit". She said the two parties have "had some very good discussions" and both sides want to bring "stability to the UK Government".

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, warned Tuesday that "the current uncertainty can not continue" and on Wednesday issued five "pressing questions" on Twitter.

The performance of the British economy could also influence perceptions of Brexit.

"It's passing quicker than anyone believes". Any further delay could mean her missing planned attendance at Royal Ascot.

But May's predecessor, David Cameron, said there would be pressure after last week's surprise for a "softer" Brexit that gave greater priority to a close trading deal with the EU.

Any hard border, he said, would be catastrophic.

May will also be reliant upon the 10 lawmakers from the eurosceptic DUP, who would help her edge past the 326 votes needed in parliament to avoid the government collapsing.

They would not form a coalition.

"My main concern is the peace process". London's neutrality is key to the delicate balance of power in Northern Ireland, which was once plagued by violence over Britain's control of the province.

The head of the Democratic Unionist Party has arrived for crucial talks on whether to support Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives in an alliance.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron called for a cross-party committee to be set up to handle the Brexit negotiations.

The Northern Ireland-based party is being courted by May to create an alliance to push through the Conservative Party's agenda after a disastrous snap election left May short of a majority in Parliament.
