Her "new deal for workers", aimed to steal Labour clothes by offering protections for those in the "gig economy", a statutory right to leave for those who need to care for a family member and a commitment to further increases in the living wage.

Moreover, the Liberal Party questioned the Conservatives' intentions and urged Britons not to trust the Tories.

The new rules on pay transparency will be part of a worker rights package that Downing Street hopes will convince millions of traditional Labour supporters to switch to the Conservatives, including working-class people and racial minorities.

Mrs May, who is trying to position herself as the politician on the side of working people, will commit to increasing the National Living Wage - now £7.50 an hour - in line with average earnings until 2022. Labour has promised to increase the National Living Wage to £10 by 2020. They would have their jobs and employment rights protected when they return to work.

Theresa May is set to make her most audacious bid for Labour voters yet ahead of the general election with plans to ensure workers' rights are maintained after Brexit and a raft of new provisions for workers.

Other pledges include a guarantee that workers will not lose any of the protections they enjoy under European Union law after Brexit, and a commitment to ensure that employees receive the same level of information about their company's future as shareholders.

He said: "Ray Martin-Wells wrote to me and asked us to step down from the election and I said no absolutely not, because if you look at the facts it is the Conservatives who should be standing down if anybody was".

Workers will be able to take up to one year's leave to care for an elderly relative under wide-ranging plans to be outlined by the Conservatives today.

Tim Roache, general secretary of the GMB union, was equally sceptical, saying "the greatest extensions of workers' rights by a Tory government frankly wouldn't be that hard to achieve given recent history".

Theresa May is pledging to support local authorities in building a new generation of council houses for rent if the Conservatives are returned to power in the election on June 8. Mrs May said a Conservative government would tell firms to provide more details about this, and also to start reporting how they pay people of different ethnicities as well.

Mr Serwotka added: "As a government, they have introduced the most anti-trade union laws for decades and put justice out of reach for ordinary workers by introducing fees for employment tribunals".

Under plans in the party's manifesto, expected on Thursday, this will be extended to different ethnic groups.
