Pep Guardiola 'taught a lesson' in first year at Manchester City

Pep Guardiola feels Manchester City have made progress this season even though they will fall below expectations.

And he is convinced he will come back stronger for his experiences.

"I liked the way they played when we were there, now they play with a lot of talent - not just long balls, a lot of quality". "This season has been a massive lesson for me".

City have been without forward Gabriel Jesus since February after the Brazilian fractured a metatarsal, but Guardiola has pointed to a more surprising long-term absentee as a key factor in what he considers a lack of goals.

And Guardiola gave a frank assessment on the eve of Saturday's game against Hull, saying: "I will be better, definitely".

The 46-year-old has never gone a single season without winning a trophy - he has won the title in six out of seven attempts and his sides have always reached the last four of the Champions League.

"Normally, that game would have been 12-0". Many good things have happened here in the last two and a half years.

"You learn about that, you don't regret that I was not able knowing that our problems in the boxes don't solve themselves".

"But after drawing against Everton and Middlesbrough I realised we had to play really well to win".

"The way we played, especially in the big games, we were good but we were not good enough".

"Maybe that is what I should do in advance - correct that - but it is part of our growth". I tried to adapt the players as much as possible.

"I never could imagine in Barcelona, Bayern or when I arrived here I would know absolutely everything".

"So this is a more interesting year for me as a manager to grow".

All in all, I think that Manchester City will win this game but looking at the odds I don't think that this is a good bet to make.

That's because, with 65 points from 30 matches, they have a tally of two-and-a-sixth points-per-game that would have been enough to win the title in nine of the previous 24 Premier League seasons.

"The situation is clear ― eight games left and we need to qualify for the top four and that is our target for the end of the season", he said. The Champions League is so important, (qualifying) will be a huge success from my point of view and of course we have the FA Cup. "We still have a lot of things to do".
