Firmino on target as Reds go 3rd
21 April, 2017, 00:42
Liverpool claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory over Albion at The Hawthorns on Sunday and the Reds needed a resolute team performance to earn the three points from the encounter.
Roberto Firmino headed home the only goal of the game late in the first half after latching onto Lucas Leiva's flick on.
- Liverpool have won 66 points from 33 games this season; six points more than they picked up in the entirety of 2015-16. Maybe then I would have felt OK, but now it's done. Klopp added: "It is not only set-pieces with West Brom, they have really good footballers on the pitch and if you are a little bit less aggressive immediately they [start to] play. I would have been happy for him, actually, if he'd scored this goal, but there was excitement until the end - which is pretty much always the way it is when we are involved".
West Brom midfielder Claudio Yacob carelessly coughed up possession inside his own half in the 15th minute, allowing Philippe Coutinho to scamper towards goal and play in Firmino, who dragged wide left footed. We can only get better for it but I think we proved what we can do away from home again.' Mignolet told Liverpool's website.
"I said "it is already a good week for you, it could have been perfect".
James Milner, who supplied the assist for Firmino, had a chance to kill the game off with a volley in the second half while Simon Mignolet produced a great stop to deny Matt Phillips grabbing an equaliser. Liverpool were barely troubled by any West Bromwich Albion set-piece and even scored off a set-piece against them.
"And then we want to move onto 69".
West Brom manager Tony Pulis also singled out his goalkeeper Ben Foster, who raced forwards for two corners during the late push for an equaliser, nearly conceding on the counter-attack to Liverpoolsubstitute Alberto Moreno.
"Missed chances", Pulis said, when asked to explain that disappointing record.
Roberto Firmino's 11th Premier League goal of the season kept Jurgen Klopp's team on course for a top-four finish, while Mignolet was rarely threatened in the away goal.
"We've done it in the last two games and we have to keep it going and build on that".
