Fresno rampage leaves families without fathers

Howard Terry | 21 April, 2017, 00:28

Along with the three he's accused of killing on Tuesday, cops said, Muhammad also allegedly murdered a white Motel 6 security guard last week.

In the Motel 6 shooting, Muhammad said he'd killed the security guard - Carl Williams, 25, of Fresno - because Williams had disrespected him, according to Dyer.

Hours before the shootings, police had issued a news release saying Muhammad, who was suspected in the shooting death of a white security guard last week, was armed and unsafe. Another had just picked up a bag of groceries.

During interviews with police, Muhammad gave an eerily detailed description of his alleged actions during the Fresno rampage.

The man suspected of killing three white men in a racially motivated attack in Fresno says he joined a gang in Sacramento when he was 9 and got involved with the black liberation movement at 14.

David Jackson, 58, of Fresno, was gunned down in the parking lot of the charity's building.

Despite the suspect yelling "Allahu Akbar", Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the shootings had "nothing to do with terrorism". He also told authorities he hates white people. - Muhammad continued west on Mildreda, saw a vehicle parked and saw two individuals inside the auto, the vehicle started to drive away, Muhammad fired one round at the vehicle, he then noticed they were two Hispanic females, he then stopped firing at the vehicle.

Randalls was an exceptional father and "loved his two kids with everything that he had", longtime friend Eddie Valencia said. "And that is what he set out to do that day", Dyer says.

Dyer said the attacks were unprovoked and "solely based on race".

Muhammad will face four counts of murder - one in the guard's killing and three in Tuesday's deaths - and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, officials said.

More details of the shooting that killed 3 people, as well as remembrances of the victims, continued to emerge Wednesday and fill in the full picture of the tragic criminal rampage in this Central Valley city. Police arrested Kori Ali Muhammad, who is black, saying he singled out white victims and killed them at random. He is also wanted in connection with the fatal shooting last week of an unarmed security guard at a motel in Fresno. Here is what we know about the victims:Police say the first person gunned down was PG&E utility worker Zackary Randalls, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a work truck.

Per the LA Times, Muhammad was born Kori Taylor and changed his name to Kori Ali Muhammad as a teenager, likely as he became interested in the teachings of the Nation of Islam - an African American group labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group.

Muhammad was charged in 2005 with possessing cocaine with intent to distribute, court records show. Shortly after, he was apprehended without police firing a shot.

Muhammad seemingly confessed to the shootings when he told officers, "I did it, I shot them", Dyer said.

A road is blocked by police tape after a multiple victim shooting incident in downtown Fresno, California, US April 18, 2017.

As Muhammad fled, he found another white man - 37-year-old Mark Gassett - on a sidewalk.

The Fresno police chief also told reporters that the suspect's Facebook page included posts that expressed hate for white people.

Muhammad had run afoul of Fresno police before. He shot at Gassett, and when he fell to the ground, Muhammad walked up to him and fired two more rounds into Gassett at close range.
