British MPs To Vote On Snap Election

Juana Turner | 21 April, 2017, 00:21

Her rant against Prime Minister Theresa May's shock decision to call a new general election on June 8 spread like wildfire across social media and newspapers, who said her comments summed up the mood of the nation.

The motion was approved [press release] by a vote of 522 to 13, which exceeded the necessary two-thirds vote to hold an early election.

The PM surprised allies and opponents on Tuesday when she announced her plan to bring forward an election that was not due until 2020, saying she needed to strengthen her hand in the negotiations which will reshape Britain and Europe.

May, who took office in July after an internal Conservative Party leadership race, wants the election to increase her majority in Parliament and consolidate her power as she faces both pro-EU opposition politicians and hard-core Brexit-backers inside her own party.

The Parliament's backing for snap polls plunged Britain back into political uncertainty weeks before the start of negotiations on leaving the European Union.

A senior European Parliament lawmaker says he hopes that British Prime Minister Theresa May, if strengthened by an election, will show readiness to compromise in Brexit talks.

The Prime Minister has been accused of trying to "run away" from scrutiny as broadcasters appeared set to hold election TV debates despite her refusal to take part.

"That's why we will prove the establishment experts wrong and change the direction of this election - because the British people know that they are the true wealth creators, held back by a system rigged for the wealth extractors".

Political pundits in Britain are also attributing the move as a direct attack on a weakened Opposition, the Labour party under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

She added: "People have a unity of objective". What Britain needs now is clarity, and a Prime Minister with a strong mandate to lead us out of the European Union. "I guess people see that this may give Theresa May a better majority", he said.

"On June 8th we must secure a strong mandate for our Prime Minister in her negotiations to Build a Better Britain".

Former Chancellor George Osborne will not be seeking re-election to his Tatton Constituency after he took up a post as editor of the Evening Standard paper in London as well as other jobs. The Lib Dems now have just nine seats in Parliament.

I can 100% positively reassure you that there is one question you are going to be seeing in print, on posters, in social media adverts and be asked personally way, way more than any other question over the next (nearly) two months.

The election will delay the Brexit negotiations, which must be concluded by March 29, 2019.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says that's not the case.

"But there's always a danger that national politics gets into local elections and people want to make a statement".

She said the country now has a "unity of purpose" and a desire for the government to "get on" with implementing Brexit and "making a success of it".
