Apple to Start Using Recycled Materials for Its Products

Apple, the world's most valuable company, commands a market capitalisation of US$741 billion that is around 2,000 times greater than Imagination's 288 million pounds (US$370 million). "And we're piloting innovative new recycling techniques, like our line of disassembly robots, so we can put reclaimed materials to better use in new products", the environmental responsibility report said.

That means the end of mining metals from the earth, which is a tall order.

Apple is expected to start "trial assembly" of iPhones in India next month in the industrial unit of Peenya, Bengaluru, without waiting for the government to decide on its requests for certain concessions.

"So we're a little nervous, but we also think it's really important, because as a sector, we believe it's where technology should be going", commented Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environmental, policy and social initiatives, in an interview with Vice News.

What the company won't do in the name of green technology is build an iPhone with an extended useful life, or one that users can fix themselves instead of having to take it to an Apple Store.

"The application (of Apple) has not made much headway after passing through key ministries such as commerce, technology and finance", according to a Karnataka government official, as cited on ET.

"It's not clear to me whether the company's focus on nominal iPhone upgrades and improvements is a system issue, or suggests that we're reaching the limits of smartphone capabilities", he continued. In 2016, 96 percent of the electricity Apple uses worldwide came from renewable energy. It is 100% renewable in 24 countries and all of its data centers. The company is encouraging its suppliers to do the same, and seven have promised to power their Apple manufacturing with renewable energy by the end of 2018.

Apple did not disclose the amount of recycled products now used in its products.

Like its rival Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, which arrive on the market Friday, Apple's next iPhone could feature a curved-edge screen face that's almost bezel free, various sources have reported. iPhone fans might also have to drop more cash than usual for Apple's newest phone, which is rumored to be priced in the $1,000 range.

Note however Apple's use of the phrase, "one day".

"It's an ambitious goal that will require many years of collaboration across multiple Apple teams, our suppliers, and specialty recyclers - but our work is already under way", the report states. The Earth Day challenge is just for fun.
