World's 'street food capital' bans street food

The race to erase street food continues: Yaowarat and Khaosan are up next The World's Street Food Capital is Banning Street Food

But, sadly, that could all come to an end as Bangkok city officials reportedly consider a crack-down on stalls on main roads for "order and hygiene reasons".

But food writer and TV presenter Adam Liaw has hosed down concerns the move would see the end of the world's most vibrant street food destination. Most Bangkok sidewalks are narrow, particularly in the inner city.

Tourists enjoy a meal close to traffic on Yaowarat Road, Bangkok.

According to AFP (via Channel News Asia), the clean-up campaign has prompted outcry and anguish in the food-obsessed capital, which is famed for its eclectic and bustling street food scene. However, the BMA this week vowed to continue implementing its ambitious policy of reclaiming the pavements for pedestrians.

But he said the vendors will have to follow zoning and scheduling regulations imposed by BMA.

The goal is to clear illegal vendors from all 50 districts of the city, Wanlop Suwandee, chief advisor to Bangkok's governor, has declared.

The ferocity of City Hall's intent has met with opposition and dismay.

Piyabutr Jiuramonaikul, president of the Khao San Business Council, said he did not know about the BMA's plans to manage the street vendors in Khao San Road and there would have to be further discussions with the city authority. These streets also have plenty of people selling other products, such as clothes and souvenirs. Chin Chongtong, founder of Chili Paste Tour, which provides food and culture tours of Bangkok, said the "ban" had been wildly misreported. But she is anxious for some of her friends who are vendors should there really be a blanket ban on the practice. These areas could continue being shared between pedestrians and street hawkers.

There are thousands of people in the city who are employed by, or run their own, street food carts.

Yaowarat, a street full of Chinese style buildings and shops, and Khao San, a street full of pubs and bars are famous tourist attractions in Bangkok.

"Street food lies at the heart of this development". Tourists occasionally complain about food poisoning.

"All the others, they need to be gone".
