The Nepal government has made a decision to have two public holidays - on Monday and Friday - during the departure and return of the President.

India's President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various political parties highlighted the significance of the Nepal-India ties during their meetings with Bhandari and extended best wishes to Nepal in its efforts towards implementing the Constitution and holding the local- level elections, he said. The announcement on Sunday by Law Minister Ajay Shankar Nayak about the public holidays on April 17 and 22 appeared a continuation of the previous practice - but strident criticism from nearly all quarters forced the government to have a re-think on the decision.

It will be Bhandari's first official visit overseas after assuming the office in October 2015.

Home Ministry officials said the two days will be public holidays in Nepal to mark the departure and arrival of Bhandari after concluding her five-day visit to India.

Bhandari will call on President Pranab Mukherjee in the evening and attend a banquet hosted by him.

"India also seeks to advance our common interests through regional and sub-regional co-operation based on respect and sensitivity to each other's interests and concerns", he said.He further stated that wisdom and resilience would, no doubt, succeed in forging consensus through dialogue and understanding so as to achieve their objectives within a federal and democratic framework while emphasizing on crucial phase Nepal has been passing through in its quest for peace, stability and multi-party democracy. The President also remembered his recent visit to Nepal and meetings with his Nepalese counterpart past year.(ANI). Earlier this morning, President Bhandari accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan with her delegation.

In the past six months, there have been several high- level visits between Nepal and India. It is expected that both the countries will seek to explore ways to step up cooperation between the close neighbours whose ties faced some strains following the agitation by the Madhesi community past year. They demanded that government should amend the Constitution first.

The visit reflects the priority that both nations attach to further strengthening of their age-old and unique partnership, underpinned by shared historical and cultural linkages and strong people-to-people connections. "If not backed by economic transformation, political transformation can not be sustainable", Bhandari said at an event here organised by industry chambers CII, Ficci and Assocham. "She will also visit Gujarat and Odisha and pay obeisance at temples of Dwarka, Somnath and Puri", Dalela added.
