In 1967, 20-year-old Kathrine Switzer made history when she defiantly became the first woman to officially run in the Boston Marathon - even as race officials tried to physically stop her. The university student entered as "K.V. Switzer" to hide her gender.

The fact she dared to compete led one race official to try to rip the number 261 from her back, a few miles in. She said that the 261 bib number also has been retired for the marathon.

"I finished, like I did 50 years ago", Switzer posted on Facebook after completing Monday's race.

On the day itself, when race officials saw she was but a bosom-carrying baby-machine, they were furious.

BOSTON Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu Hayle and Atsede Baysa will line up among the world's top distance runners on Monday to defend their Boston Marathon titles, with tens of thousands of spectators expected to line the course amid tight security.

"I'm exhilarated", she told ABC News after finishing the 26.2-mile race on Monday. During this year's Boston Marathon, however, he walked.

One runner - a veteran who lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan - was approaching the finish line when he picked up his guide and an American flag, crossing the line as bystanders cheered. She told us he changed her life, gave her a career, focus, and health, and practically introduced her to her husband.

She noted that a woman had already run the course once - without entering.

Switzer went on to win the New York City Marathon in 1974 and successfully campaign for the women's marathon to become an Olympic sport in 1984.

The station reports that Granville is a nine-year veteran that lost a portion of his leg to a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan in 2008.

There was no apparent restriction on a woman's participation in the marathon.

Typically, Granville uses a hand bike to compete in marathons, but this time he chose to ditch the bike and use his two very capable legs.

Sanchez said that he had kept the flag boxed away, along with written notes from his patrol for three or four years, before he read the words. She is the founder of 261 Fearless, a running club for women.

The 4:59:58 finish was the slowest of her career for Tews, but it was a triumph nonetheless for the 58-year-old MacMillan Associates structural designer.
