David Letterman replaces Neil Young at Rock Hall show

Edmund Wade | 20 April, 2017, 00:37

Letterman was named a last-minute fill-in as Pearl Jam's inductor this week after Neil Young fell ill and had to back out of the show.

Steve Perry reunited with Journey for the first time in 20-plus years as part of the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday night.

The Rock Hall also inducted Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Tupac Shakur, and Pearl Jam.

This Friday, Seattle rockers Pearl Jam will be among those inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame at a ceremony held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Rock & Roll of Fame began its 2017 Induction Ceremony by paying homage to the first artist ever inducted. Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson will induct prog rock legends Yes, while Jackson Browne will be on hand to induct Joan Baez.

Pat Monahan of Train presented the band with a great speech of his own: "Their music has transcended all things that separate us as humans". We knew we were better together than apart.

Snoop Dogg paid tribute to legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, calling Tupac, "the greatest rapper of all time". Mocking the band for their frequent change in percussionists, he said, "The entire balcony is filled with Pearl Jam drummers".

Perry, 68, was there with former bandmates Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Steve Smith and Ross Valory, along with current lead singer Arnel Pineda, who was not included in the band's honor. Guitarist Nile Rodgers will be given the hall's Award for Musical Excellence, the Hall of Fame said on its website. Lenny Kravitz led a gospel choir on "When Doves Cry", followed by a rocking take on Sign O' The Times track "The Cross". 'And I'm happy to say, because they stood up to them, every concert ticket in America today is free'. Now, Pearl Jam aren't quite metal (although who can deny their incredible debut album?) but this story does have a metal tinge to it.

The 76-year-old, who admitted most younger people had never heard her work, made a return to the spotlight this week when her song "Nasty Man" went viral.

HBO will air an edited version of the ceremony at 8 p.m. April 29.
