But Facebook did announce a new application for Oculus, called Facebook Spaces, designed so that friends can connect virtually in an interactive virtual environment as if they were in the same room. Or use your smartphone's camera to spruce up your dinky apartment, at least virtually. Bringing the simplest of augmented reality editing tools Zuckerberg described Tuesday to Instagram again could deliver another hit to Snapchat, which has about 158 million daily users (Instagram has at least twice as many; Facebook's main app boasts eight times that number). Zuckerberg also said Facebook is making the camera the first augmented reality platform.

"We see the beginning of a new platform", Zuckerberg said. Frame Studio and AR Studio are new tools for developers to build masks, animations and more.

After a few somber seconds it was back to talk of how technology - particularly augmented reality - can be used to build community.

"In the future, technology is going to make us more productive and free us up to enjoy interacting with each other", he said. Ever since Spiegel spurned Zuckerberg and his attempt to buy Snapchat for $3 billion, Facebook has issued clone after clone of parts of Snapchat's core product.

But Facebook could still have the edge on rivals such as Snapchat, which also launched some augmented reality features on Tuesday, likely to coincide with Facebook's news. The incident alarmed many about the unlawful use of the feature and how Facebook is not able to handle it.

Snap representatives did not immediately respond to an email for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

This is where things start to get a little insane, and potentially creepy for sensitive people. "This will give people a chance to experience augmented reality in a way that isn't so scary or off-putting".

The company is taking a similar approach with its Messenger chat app. They launch chat windows or experiences with businesses when scanned through Messenger's camera screen. The idea is simplify what might otherwise require a flurry of texts and sharing of links.

The Facebook founder also briefly addressed a tragedy that took place Monday, when a man posted video of a murder on Facebook.

In a statement on Monday, the company said the video of the shooting death uploaded by Stephens had been on its site and smartphone app too long and that it was launching a review of how objectionable material is reported and taken down.

Facebook (FB) shareholders will vote on several key topics at the company's June 1 annual meeting in Redwood City, Calif., including whether to nominate an independent chair to the board of directors to replace current chair Mark Zuckerberg, who also serves as CEO, according to a recent SEC filing.
