UK Prime Minister Theresa May to seek early election

Standing outside her Downing Street office, May said she had been reluctant about asking parliament to back her move to bring forward the election from 2020, but decided it was necessary to win support for her ruling Conservative Party's efforts to press ahead with Britain's departure from the EU. Last summer after the country voted to leave the EU, Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership and since I became Prime Minister the Government has delivered precisely that.

"Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit", said May.

As Brexit will be one of the most momentous and hard peacetime decisions ever made in the United Kingdom, she wants to have a mandate from the country (and may want to avoid having to go through an election in the wake of us actually quitting the EU). We have at this moment a one-off chance to get this done.

For decades British prime ministers could call elections at will, but that changed with the 2011 Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, which established set polling days every five years.

LABOUR will offer an "effective alternative" to the Conservative government, Jeremy Corbyn said, as Theresa May called a snap election. The BBC, ITV, Sky, and Channel 4 are yet to comment on the matter (and are unlikely to until the election is rubber-stamped by Parliament on Wednesday) but privately they will be keen to stage events. Failure to maintain a majority would likely see the Conservatives forced out of government at the hands of the Labour Party or a coalition of Labour and Liberal Democrats.

May wants to establish a fundamental political cleavage in British society between pro and anti-Brexit forces.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May just called a snap election.

The bid failed, with French voters rejecting the right and electing the Socialists to a majority in the National Assembly, forcing Chirac to appoint Socialist leader Lionel Jospin as prime minister. There is not going to be a general election'. Mainly because the market, having viewed the huge lead enjoyed by the Conservatives in the opinion polls, is assuming that Mrs May will win and secure her own personal mandate.

European Union negotiations won't really get underway until Autumn, so this is seen as the last chance for May to call an election before formal proceedings begin.

Explaining her decision, Mrs May said that Westminster had become divided following the European Union referendum, which could "cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country".

The Prime Minister vowed to campaign around the country as she revealed plans for the snap election this morning but she will steer clear of unsafe prime time TV clashes. But the election still carries risk for May, with voters' potentially wary at being asked to go to the polls again, less than a year after the European Union referendum.

Conservative party sources suggest May wanted to shut down speculation about her participation early on. There's a chance that the Lib Dems will do better - in the first hour since the general election announcement this morning, they gained 1,000 members.

Sturgeon said Tuesday that May was seeking "to crush the voices of people who disagree with her".

As part of a half-yearly update to its outlook, the International Monetary Fund lifted its forecast for British economic growth this year to 2.0 percent from 1.5 percent in January, bringing it in line with the Bank of England but above many other forecasters.

The Scottish National Party now holds 54 of Scotland's 59 seats in the British Parliament, making it the third-largest party there.
