Teammates for a day, Tony Romo, Dirk Nowitzki carry friendship longer

Tuesday night, the Dallas Mavericks will be making him an honorary member of their basketball team for their home game against the-you guessed it-Denver Nuggets.

Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys gestures against the Detroit Lions during the second half of their NFC Wild Card Playoff game at AT&T Stadium on January 4, 2015 in Arlington.

"Obviously we knew we couldn't check him in", said Nowitzki, who helped hatch the plan to honor Romo.

Silver told Cuban the contract would not be honored, which killed the idea but did not stop the Mavericks from honoring the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

According to ESPN, Cuban brought up the idea to National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver, who rejected the notion and said the National Basketball Association wouldn't honor Romo's contract.

"Tony didn't get a chance to finish out his career the way everybody that loves him as a Dallas Cowboy would have liked".

However, it turns out Mavs owner Mark Cuban had intentions for the Dallas Cowboys legend to play in the actual game against the Denver Nuggets. They did manage to trim it to eight in the fourth quarter, but the Nuggets pulled away again.

Butler said that Romo's overall skills in many sports is indicative of his athletic talents. The team honored Romo for his service to the Cowboys over a 14-year career.

"And so this week has been special in the sense that people have made me feel that they appreciated me, that they enjoyed me playing and being the quarterback and that it meant something to them and they wanted to root for me and they were passionate about it".

Coach Carlisle then called Nowitzki out to the floor and the superstar heaped praise upon Romo for everything he's done for the city of Dallas.

Houston was thought to be Romo's likeliest destination, had he opted to continue to play football.

Romo's "Mav for a day" experience came exactly a week after it was announced that he was leaving the Cowboys and joining CBS as the No. 1 National Football League analyst.

Romo will be "a Maverick for a day" as the team's tribute to the longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who made his move to CBS as the NFL's lead analyst last week.

So let's relive, via Twitter, how the whole Romo day went down.

But watching Romo and especially listening to what he had to say, one thing was pretty clear.

Romo admitted to feeling a little out of place after going through his first - and only - Mavericks shootaround on Tuesday morning. "I can't get into specific details at this time, but encourage fans to be in their seats when warmups begin".

He will also be happy seeing Romo on the bench, and he does not agree with those who have a problem with what Cuban will do.
