Fought said she did not see the lion's head, but could tell by its size and the way it walked exactly why Lenore went silent. The suspected mountain lion entered through a set of French doors that had been left partially open to allow the dog access to the outdoors, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"The family is really shaken up by this", Sheriff's spokesman Detective Sal Zuno said, adding that none of the home's three residents were injured. She saw large wet paw prints at the entrance to the bedroom and called 911.

The woman reported seeing "a shadow of an animal enter the room" from the French doors, take the dog from where it had been sleeping at the foot of the bed and walk out. More than half of the state is considered mountain lion habitat, and it's not unusual for the stealthy creatures to attack livestock and household pets, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

"But mountain lions are wild animals, they're hunters", he said. "I knew it wasn't like Leo, because it wasn't her normal bark", Peso said.

Mountain lion sightings are not uncommon in San Mateo County where rural areas blend into neighborhoods. A California game warden tried finding paw prints to help track the big cat down.

Mountain lions usually keep their distance from homes, but a couple years ago, Fought and her daughter say one attacked their horse.

"We don't know anything yet", Hughan said. People should not venture into the wilderness alone and avoid hiking or jogging when the mountain lions are most active during dawn, dusk and at night. The mountain lion gained entry to the house via the back door which was cracked open.

It also warns against leaving pets and small children unattended, and recommends keeping pet food indoors.

Authorities want to remind residents to lock and secure their home's doors and windows.

"They're very easy to find, inexpensive, light and compact", Zuno said of the devices.
