Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat led a Kenyan clean sweep at the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday (Apr 17), both timing late bursts to perfection to claim the men's and women's races of the prestigious event.

Kirui waved and smiled as he took the tape in a time of 2hr 9min 37sec, with Rupp finishing in second.

Kirui finished with a time of 2:09:37, edging out American Galen Rupp, for his first Boston Marathon victory.

Jordan Hasay, racing her first ever marathon, finished third, and fellow American Desi Linden was fourth.

"It's my last [Boston] Marathon - what do I have to worry about?" Bobbi Gibb, who competed unofficially the year before Switzer, will be the grand marshal for the Patriots' Day race.

Finishing 13th, about eight minutes behind Rupp, was 2014 Boston champion Meb Keflezighi.

Top-seeded distance runner Atsede Baysa, of Ethiopia, participates in a Boston Marathon media availability Friday, April 14, 2017, in advance of Monday's race in Boston.

The 27-year old Garic finished in 24th place overall in the Men's Open Wheelchair Division and 32nd overall in a time of 1:39:38.

Also in the field was Boston Police Commissioner William Evans, who ran for the 18th time in 2013 but has skipped the races since the bombings so he could be available in case of another emergency. The straight-line Boston course doesn't qualify for world records because of the possibility of a supportive tailwind like the one on Monday. "I heard so many wonderful things about this race and the support is like nothing I have ever received in a marathon".

Security was high along the course, that begins in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and passes through Boston's suburbs to the finish line on Boylston Street, where a pair of ethnic Chechen brothers in 2013 set off two homemade bombs, killing three people and injuring more than 200. It was 69 and warming at the halfway point in Wellesley and expected to be up to 72 degrees by the time the runners reached the finish in Boston's Back Bay.

Briggs then entered himself and Switzer - who registered as K.V. Switzer - in the 1967 Boston Marathon.

"If I can come back", he said, "everyone can".

A tailwind of 13 miles per hour gave the runners a push at the start on Monday.
