Overbooking rife, but Delta softens the blow for its passengers

Overbooking rife but Delta softens the blow for its passengers Delta chief calls overbooking 'valid' practice

The man, 69-year old Dr. David Dao, refused to be involuntarily re-booked when United needed the seats for four crew members who needed to get to Louisville for reassignment.

On Friday, a United spokeswoman said the airline changed its policy to require traveling employees to book a flight at least 60 minutes before departure. American Airlines updated its rules to say that no passenger who has boarded the plane will be removed to give the seat to someone else.

"I have heard from many of you who feel like we let you down", he said, adding that the company will review the disruption and "develop a plan to avoid a similar situation in the future". According to the AP, Delta convinced the most passengers to forfeit their seats in large part because they offer larger payouts than any other airline.

So, in an effort to win back trust and business, the Atlanta-based airline is giving customers 20,000 bonus miles. According to Department of Transportation statistics, the major U.S. airlines bumped 475,054 passengers a year ago - 434,425 voluntarily and 40,629 involuntarily.

None would describe their limits on paying passengers.

The practice has been questioned, however, since video of the United Express incident went viral.

"We need to use this regrettable event as a defining moment and pivot off it to craft friendly policies", Milton said in a note to employees.

The result is that gate attendants have a list of passengers to call up to confirm they will fly standby, thus saving the airline time and hassle in pleading for volunteers, negotiations and time.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Delta passengers who were "significantly affected" by the airline's weather issues can expect to receive a bit of redress for the travel woes they experienced last week. If Delta paid $9,950 to every person it bumped involuntarily previous year, that would total $12 million.

"There were so many people at the airport who were heading to weddings, people who were going to funerals, people who were going to see their dying parents, who had real reasons to go", said Ms Bloom "And of course, we had a reason to go - we wanted to see our family - but it wasn't a life-or-death situation". In the search for a volunteer to be rebooked, United stopped at $800.
