Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton grabbed his 5th China Grand Prix trophy with a dominating performance here at the Shanghai Audi International Circuit on Sunday.

Many drivers, including Sebastian Vettel, elected to pit under the Virtual Safety Car for dries, but it ended up not working in their favor as - as soon as the Virtual Safety Car was lifted - a full Safety Car period was deployed after Antonio Giovinazzi spun into the wall on the front straight. But while that was happening, Ferrari kept Raikkonen out on his old soft tyres - hoping to get him to the end - despite the Finn growing increasingly frustrated over the radio at the handling of his vehicle and the fact he was losing time in traffic while his rivals were in clear air and on fresh rubber. Or so he thought. A short time later, on the fourth lap, Antonio Giovinazzi hit a wet patch and slammed into the wall, severely damaging his Sauber vehicle and bringing the race to a halt again.

The Scuderia Ferrari driver ended up just 6.250 seconds behind race victor Lewis Hamilton, but did so after running fifth in the laps after the safety auto, when he was caught up by its timing having already stopped for slick tyres during the virtual safety vehicle a few laps earlier.

Whilst Hamilton secured his first success of the 2017 calendar in Shanghai, Vettel made hard work of fighting for 2 on the podium in front of Verstappen to complete the top 3 for the weekend.

While Ferrari's auto proved a match for main rival Mercedes this season, Raikkonen has yet to finish on the podium - although he pointed out that his strategy compromised his race in China.

"I love this fight that we are having and sitting there with Sebastian I was like 'this is going to go right down to the end of the season"'.

"I think he's been a real breath of fresh air for everyone so obviously he's got a great following and he's definitely been in some great situations in some races".

April 10 (ANI): Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has predicted that his fight with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel at the Bahrain Grand Prix will be "one of the closest".

"It was a very challenging race but I really enjoyed it".

Dutch teenager Max Verstappen is the new shining light at Red Bull, where Vettel won his titles.

The results in Melbourne and Shanghai have raised hopes that the early-season rivalry between a duo with seven Formula One championships between them and locked on 43 points apiece in the overall standings, could become a full-blown title duel.

After passing the sister Ferrari down the inside of Turn Six, Vettel then overtook Ricciardo on the exit of the same corner - even banging wheels with his former team-mate in order to sweep ahead.

This led to the safety vehicle coming out on track to ruin Vettel's smart strategic move. Those last 20 laps or so really exchanging times. The German was able to quickly crawl over the back of Ricciardo's auto ahead, before producing a stunning overtake around the outside of the same corner he passed Raikkonen to move up to third place, before then immediately putting in the fastest lap of the race, setting his sights on Verstappen ahead.

Carlos Sainz Jr finished seventh for Toro Rosso with Kevin Magnussen's Haas eighth and the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon rounding out the top 10.

"We enjoy it because it's a close battle and the cars look better and are nicer to drive".

McLaren's other driver, Fernando Alonso, was also forced to stop on lap 34 with a driveshaft problem.
