Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real Madrid to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday, ending the German side's tournament record of 16 straight wins at home.

Just two minutes after the break, Madrid levelled the score through Ronaldo's first goal in the tournament since September a year ago, goal.com reported. "That is how ambitious he is". The tie, though, would be very much alive again should Bayern snatch an early goal in Mardid, where the fitness of Lewandowski could well prove key. The team also had a goal from Sergio Ramos disallowed for offside not long before the final whistle.

Ronaldo said it was a moment to savour.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at five things we learned from the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Los Merengues were swift in notching their equaliser after the break when Dani Carvajal's darting run down the wing resulted in a well-timed cross to Ronaldo, who made up for previous misses with a smart volley past Manuel Neuer.

Arturo Vidal heads in the opening goal to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 lead.

Ronaldo's second-half brace and 100th European goal garnered Madrid precious 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena. I trained hard in order to be okay for this month and a half of competition. "I'm happy with the substation because Marco did well out there".

Despite scoring 28 goals in 37 outings this season - including 19 in La Liga - Ronaldo has been scrutinised by different pundits this season for a perceived lack of form and commitment.

Real have lost just one of their 21 Champions League games since the start of last season and so Bayern face a massive task if they're to overturn this deficit.

Zidane did not say whether he will rest Ronaldo for the team's away game at relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon tomorrow in the Spanish league.

The Bavarians now have it all to do for the return in Madrid next Tuesday. "We were against a goalkeeper who is a wall".

"For the second leg he will 100 per cent be back".

The Brazilian forward is banned for tomorrow's visit to Real Sociedad and the "Clasico" showdown at Real Madrid the following week, plus the game against basement club Osasuna, with Paco Alcacer likely to take his place.
