Researchers Find A New Way To Make Water From Thin Air

Device pulls water from dry air, powered only by the sun Solar panel 'harvester' sucks moisture from dry air

And while there is clearly some way to go before improvements yield sufficient water to meet household needs, senior researcher Omar Yaghi calls the device a "major breakthrough".

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have managed to separate water from atmospheric air using little to no additional energy.

The new water harvester is made of metal organic framework crystals pressed into a thin sheet of copper metal and placed between a solar absorber (above) and a condenser plate (below). The combination of zirconium metal and adipic acid is known to bind water vapor.

Laboratory tests of the device harvested 2.8 liters of water per day for every kilogram of MOF-801 used.

While one may think that bright sunlight is required for the harvester to work like it should, the solar-powered water harvester can work even when there isn't an especially prominent source of sunlight.

As they report in the journal Science, Wang and her colleagues tested the prototype of their MOF-based device on the roof of a building at MIT, and it worked great.

The prototype is effective by only using two pounds of MOF crystals. If you were wondering, deserts like the Mojave have a humidity level much higher than 20%.

Prof. Wang and her team are now continuing to improve the water harvesting system, while Prof. The key component is a promising class of synthetic porous materials called metal-organic frameworks, composed of organic molecules stitched together with metal atoms, which Yaghi pioneered (see "A Better Way to Capture Carbon"). The invention has the potential to bring clean drinking water to people living in places that need water desperately, like in countries undergoing drought conditions or areas of the world with a relatively low amount of humidity. "The special property of this material that made all this possible is the fact that it has high affinity to water molecules to pull them out of the air, but does not hold on to them too tightly so that water can be concentrated and released with a slight temperature change". Since Yaghi developed MOFs, over 20,000 different types of MOFs have been created around the world that can hold hydrogen and methane or that can contain petrochemicals in processing plants.

A new device draws liters of water out of air, even in desert-like climates.

This was the "first new study that reported for the proof-of-concept towards real applications of MOF materials, likely leading to commercialization of the device", he said.

"To have water running all the time, you could design a system that absorbs the humidity during the night and evolves it during the day", he said.

There, the sand acts as a kind of porous material that collects condensed water during the cool nights, he explained.

In a new meta-analysis published in PLOS One, researchers from Purdue, Stanford and the Canadian Council on Animal Care look at the different techniques used to induce laughter in rats in order to improve their wellbeing and capture their laughter, which is delightful. "It is just a matter of further engineering now", says Yaghi about making the device's use more wide scale in future.

Obviously scaling up to eventual commercialization comes next."We did some estimates, and anticipate if you had a 30 liter unit, say the size of a carry-on suitcase, that's equivalent to 5 kg of MOF or so", said Wang.
