A Hennepin County outbreak of childhood measles now includes eight cases, after five more cases were confirmed by the Minnesota Department of Health.

This particular case is in an adult and a direct result of exposure to the state first case of 2017 in late March.

They add that one out of 1,000 children with measles develops encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and that for every 1,000 children with measles, one or two will die from the disease. A person with measles is contagious for four days before and four days after the rash appears.

Measles is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death.

State health officials say the illness, which spreads through coughing and sneezing, starts with a high fever, runny nose, cough, reddened light-sensitive eyes.

Washtenaw County health officials say anyone who was at Mark's Midtown Coney Island on Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor between noon and 3 p.m. April 6 or at Benny's Family Dining on Industrial Highway during the same hours the following day should monitor themselves for rash with fever or other symptoms consistent with measles for 21 days.

MDHSS said vaccinations are the best way to prevent measles.

Seven of the eight cases occurred among people who have been in contact with one another, Kris Ehresmann, MDH infectious-disease division director, said in the news release. In 2014, 667 measles cases were reported in the United States, marking the highest rate since 2000. According to the MDHHS website, the measles vaccine is highly effective and safe. The vaccination, or documentation of immunity to measles, is recommended for all persons traveling internationally.

Measles is a highly-contagious, airborne disease. But there have been more cases in recent years, which is of great concern to public health authorities.

Having two doses of MMR vaccine at least 28 days apart is fully protective, according to WCPH. "The first dose is routinely given to children after their first birthday". However, given that no other passengers on the flight have apparently contracted measles, Wells believes it is unlikely any other passengers on that flight will come down with it. In 2014, there were 667 cases nationwide, including five cases in MI.

"Measles is still common in many parts of the world, including some countries in Europe, Asia the Pacific and Africa", WCPH notes.

People from Bay State may have been infected with measles due to European tourists.
