Nintendo sold more than 900k Switch units in the US last month

Garry Little | 16 April, 2017, 01:18

It will be interesting to see if the Switch can keep the momentum going, especially after Nintendo is able to increase supply to keep up with demand. The Nintendo Switch is sold out at nearly every store, with Ebay having the only inventory. Nintendo notes that this sales surge was accomplished in a non-traditional month for a console launch. The rendering of the game on the Nintendo Switch is astounding, with sharp and bright screens with powerful stereo speakers. That is up from its original forecast of 5 million units- although it is still not particularly special, it does indicate that the Switch is performing better than anyone expected. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and almost 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console.

The latest Nintendo Switch console is now the current top selling console compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3 in the USA. The other consoles also launched near a holiday time where spending $300 was easy to justify, instead of launching in March. The numbers come from the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. Saying the Switch and its flagship game have gotten off to a good start would be an understatement.

The small controllers that are detachable from the mobile unit also slide onto a home controller. Now, even the Nintendo Switch is getting its own version and it looks like it is coming pretty soon. That means Nintendo sold more copies of Breath of the Wild for the Switch than it sold of the Switch console itself. Nintendo killed region locking on the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo hopes that the numbers, not to mention the money, will continue to flow, especially as new titles land on the Switch. Both versions will be the same price. Two stylish versions of the system will be released: a version with a set of gray Joy-Con, and a version with one neon blue and one neon red Joy-Con.
