Justice Department drops North Carolina LGBT rights lawsuit

No More HB2: What Now for North Carolina Employers? NC Legislators Angry at 'Bathroom Law' Boycotts Pass Bill Threatening Atlantic Coast Conference

Justice, under the Trump administration, submitted a dismissal agreement Friday in the Middle District of N.C., where competing lawsuits were filed May 9. "This sham 'deal, ' passed without a single LGBTQ person at the table, actually doubles down on discrimination against millions of North Carolinians".

"House Bill 142 literally does not do one thing to protect the LGBT community and locks in HB2's most basic and offensive provision", the Observer's editorial board said.

As this and other discriminatory efforts show - whether it be in North Carolina, Texas or many other states - LGBT rights continue to be under attack.

The bill also says that same-sex marriages performed in other states wouldn't be recognized in North Carolina. Attorney General Jeff Sessions openly opposes trans equality and has sought to reverse Obama-era protections for LGBTQ people.

James Esseks, the ACLU's LGBT Project Director said the new law is flawed because it keeps a ban on cities and counties from creating their own nondiscriminatory ordinaces until 2020 and relegates to the state legislature the power to regulate bathroom access.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has picked Texas to host six championships through 2021 despite a proposed "bathroom bill" similar to what led the governing body to punish North Carolina. "North Carolina's new law does not cure the infirmity of this type of discrimination".

The Trump administration also reversed guidelines that transgender students nationwide should be able to use school bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity.

"For over a year now, House Bill 2 has been a dark cloud hanging over our great state", Cooper said on signing the legislation that repealed the law.

The General Assembly of the State of North Carolina declares that the Obergefell v. Hodges decision of the United States Supreme Court of 2015 is null and void in the State of North Carolina...

Speaking to the Associated Press, Lambda Legal lawyer Tara Borelli added, "This move does not affect the merits of the case".

The "Uphold Historical Marriage Act", otherwise known as House Bill 780, declares that the high court "overstepped its constitutional bounds" when it decided to make same-sex marriage legal. "We'll continue this fight as long as it takes to truly strike down this disastrous law for good". HB2 originated in response to the Charlotte City Council's addition of LGBT protections to the city's non-discrimination ordinance. In late March, a Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago issued a decision holding that employment discrimination based on sexual orientation constitutes sex discrimination. She said the new law, known as House Bill 142, is essentially a continuation of its predecessor's discrimination.
