A student lost his life while five others were injured on Thursday during a clash at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan.

Raising his voice on the incident, the chairman PTI tweeted that the "Law of Jungle" can not be prevailed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Witnesses and local media reported angry students associated with the ruling right-wing political parties in Pakhtunkhwa province used sticks and broken glasses during the attack on Mashal Khan, a journalism student at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan.

The Pakistani Police has arrested 10 students in connection with the gruesome incident.

The incident occurred within the university premises.

He said that the suspects were identified through CCTV footage of the incident, and that the police have formed three teams to arrest the remaining suspects. The Interior Ministry also threatened to block all social media websites with blasphemous content.

Why the police and university guards were so lazy in response and why didn't the cops present in the university do anything to disperse the students to save Mashal and two other students?

Blasphemy against Islam is a sensitive subject in Pakistan, where punishment for the crime ranges from a fine to a mandatory death sentence, depending on the specific offence. "Hold the VC, dean, admin responsible for negligence & lack of security to protect innocent students leading to murder of Mashal", tweeted Aysha Khan.

Khan was assaulted by a large group of students and appears to have succumbed to a gunshot wound, the DIG was quoted as saying in the Dawn newspaper.

Qibla Ayaz, an Islamic scholar and former vice chancellor of Peshawar University, told VOA's Deewa service in a reference to the student's death that sharia, or Islamic law, doesn't allow mob justice.

Khan's death comes amid worldwide calls to release Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman who was sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad after an argument with a group of Muslim women.

In 2011, a bodyguard assassinated Punjab provincial governor Salman Taseer after the governor called for reforming blasphemy laws. The killer, who was put to death a year ago, has been dubbed a martyr to Islam by religious hard-liners, and a shrine has been erected at his grave.
