Dramatic late strike earns Leeds a point at Newcastle

If we suffer again in these next five games then I am sure you will see a response.

Easter has never traditionally been a good time for Leeds United, but they can all but seal a place in the EFL Championship play-offs with two good results over the Bank Holiday weekend.

"We are where we are because we have done something right, and the priority is just to go up", he said at a press conference.

Mark Warburton's team would have moved eight points clear of trouble had they won but will now be looking nervously over their shoulder ahead of the final four fixtures, as will Birmingham, who could only pick up a point at already-relegated Rotherham in a 1-1 draw.

Whilst Newcastle will be keen to secure top spot in the Championship, they will also be keenly aware of the threat of Huddersfield in third, 10 points further back.

Newcastle dominated the play for the most part, but Leeds hung in there hoping for a chance to drop to them, and when it did they were lucky that it came to Woods who buried it, sparking wild celebrations.

And Whelan believes the Spaniard, who has been a creative hub for Leeds this season, was knocked off his game and had been controlling play before the incident. That for me is one of the main reasons they are where they are.

"It sounds unusual to say that about a game at St James' Park but I'd say they've been less up-and-down recently".

"They know exactly what's expected of them. I don't understand a lot of things in the last few games".

Both teams' form has been shaky in recent weeks, winning just two of their last five league games respectively.

Garry Monk's side are not guaranteed a play off place, as with 15 points still left to play for, they are only 5 points ahead of 7th placed Fulham so defeat would really turn the pressure up at Elland Road. We will stick to what we have been doing and focus on each game.
