Uber used secret program to track Lyft drivers

In other words, Uber could see, almost in real time, all of Lyft's drivers who were available for new rides - and where those drivers were located. Uber reportedly resorted to these measures to find out which drivers are working for both Lyft and Uber and then offered incentives to entice these drivers to only work for Uber. Considering the program's data revealed that 60 percent of Lyft's drivers were double-apping, Uber ended up doling out tens of millions of dollars a week in bonuses. A spokesperson for Lyft told the publication: "We are in a competitive industry".

Uber created fake rider accounts on Lyft and used software to fool Lyft's system into thinking those riders were in certain locations.

Uber reportedly used software to edit the location of each Lyft account, arranging them in a way that it was able to see the location of Lyft cars across an entire city.

The report claims that this covert "software-based effort" made it easier for Uber to maintain its lead in the United States between 2014 and early 2016 by devising better strategies to lure drivers away from its rival.

Drivers are currency for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft.

Fellow tech giant Uber, on the other hand, seems to revel in evil deeds - or at the very least questionable business practices - including using a program called "Hell" to undermine its competition.

Uber has not returned a request for comment. The Information, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, reported that only a few people knew of the program, including CEO Travis Kalanick. Uber supposedly obtained this information upon realising that Lyft drivers had unchanging, special numbered IDs. But Lyft isn't backing down and may have the opportunity to gain some ground in light of Uber's recent controversies.
