THROUGH its ad hoc committee investigating the alleged corruption, malpractices and breach of due process in the award of Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL) 245, the House of Representatives yesterday explained why former President Goodluck Jonathan must appear before the Green Chamber.

Jonathan on Tuesday dismissed reports that he received $200m as kick-back from the said deal.

"The committee was aware of recent information that have come to light, both nationally and internationally, indicating that former President Jonathan may have been complicit in the controversial deal".

Emir Sanusi recently put Nigerian leaders on blast in Kaduna.

"I can confirm that the former president is now on our radar following new details that were uncovered in latest news reports about the Malabu scandal", Mr. Atunwa, an APC lawmaker from Kwara State, has told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Monday.

"These facts have firmly placed former President Goodluck Jonathan on the Committee's radar", he added.

The report was based on Italian court documents obtained by BuzzFeed and Italian business newspaper, Il Sole 24 Ore.

The committee also urged anti-graft agencies to arrest and prosecute Mr Abubakar Alleel, who was said to have acted as a conduit through which the money was disbursed; SHELL/ ENI/NAE for their role in the "fraud" particularly as they were already facing investigations on the issue overseas; and Mr Olusegun Aganga, former Trade Investment Minister.

The Russian also repeated the claim in a follow-up interview with Italian prosecutors, led by Fabio De Pasquale in Milan.

However, Rep Atunwa said on Wednesday, that Jonathan's testimony in the ongoing investigation was important.

Shell and Eni paid $1.3 billion for the rights to the block, which industry estimates say could hold more than 9 billion barrels of oil. Malabu appealed that decision, and the status of the licence was uncertain at the time that Shell finalised its deal with the Nigerian government in 2011.

It would however be noted that the EFCC has already filed charges against former Minister of Petroleum, Chief Dan Etete, Adoke and others with respect to the Malabu oil scandal. A large part of that sum is believed to have gone to officials of Mr. Jonathan's government including Mohammed Adoke, the then attorney general. "The Committee intends to be meticulous, thorough and comprehensive in its inquiry so as to bring about finality to this seemingly intractable matter", the statement reads in full.
