The goal of the program is to encourage partners more instantly and making use of Alexa into their hardware gadgets, something the organization has been promoting through its Alexa Services program as well. Apple really struggles to extend the reach of their technology because, unlike Microsoft, it doesn't license its operating system.

"Since the introduction of Amazon Echo and Echo Dot, device makers have been asking us to provide the technology and tools to enable a far-field Alexa experience for their products", said Priya Abani, director of Amazon Alexa said in a statement. This solution is supported by leading chipset providers, enabling device manufacturers to quickly integrate Alexa voice capabilities into their products.

Amazon's promotion of its Echo and Alexa technology comes amid stiffening competition in the voice-activated artificial intelligence world from the likes of Microsoft, Apple and Google.

The NXP hardware incorporates an ARM-based i.MX processor and works with Amazon's 7-microphone array design, far-field audio processing technology, and Voice Service (AVS) client to create the Alexa application.

The move will make it easier and less expensive for hardware makers to build Alexa into their products.

Amazon Echo has been a massive hardware hit, and now the e-commerce giant is letting other manufacturers use its technology in their own voice-controlled devices. Amazon opening it up to select developers could allow for more uniformity across the Echo/Alexa ecosystem and offer developers an easier way than sourcing or developing their own microphone solution elsewhere. You can, however, visit Amazon's developer site to request an invite, and perhaps brush up on your knowledge about the reference solutions that are already available for makers hoping to bring Alexa into their products.
