The Police Responder Hybrid Sedan is based on the Ford Fusion Hybrid, but a number of changes have been made to fit it out for serious police work.

The Responder is among 13 new hybrid or electric models Ford has said it will offer globally by 2020, which will account for 40 percent of its showroom offerings, up from 13 percent.

According to Ford president of The Americas, Joe Hinrichs, "Electrifying our next generation of vehicles is core to our unwavering commitment to sustainability".

Ford says it has a 63-percent share of the market for police vehicles in the USA and suggests that police departments could save nearly $3,900 a year in fuel costs with its hybrid pursuit vehicle.

Police cars spend a lot more time on the road than their civilian counterparts.

The pursuit-rated Fusions will join adapted police versions of the Hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid Fusions already in service on the streets of New York City and other cities in non-pursuit roles. That means the auto is certified by police agencies to be tough enough to handle police pursuits for longer periods at different speeds and over obstacles such as curbs and flooded intersections.

Power for the vehicle comes from a 2.0-liter engine outfitted with a small electric motor fed by an advanced lithium-ion battery. The Blue Oval's engineers reworked the powertrain, now able to go full electric at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour (96 kph), and if needed the computer will deliver a maximum performance mode for full combined potential.

Chief Charlie Beck and LAPD officers were expected to help introduce the vehicle at a Monday morning ceremony in Los Angeles.

Ford said at $2.50 per gallon for gas, the hybrid would save a police department $3,877 per year in fuel costs per vehicle.

The Responder is a byproduct of Ford's $4.5 billion investment announced earlier this year in electric cars.

It's the first of two hybrid police vehicles the company plans to release, and the first-ever pursuit-rated hybrid vehicle, shown in publicity photos wearing an intimidating black-and-white paint job.

Arie Groenveld, Ford's chief programme engineer for police vehicles, said: "Having a pursuit rated green vehicle was what they were looking for". "We expect this vehicle will grow our market share".
