FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today released a statement to say that he's permanently killing those proceedings. In proposing the change, the FCC, led by Tom Wheeler, suggested that the ban was technologically unfounded, and in a 3-2 vote, the agency opened up the plan for public comment.

Pai can't make those aspects of flying any less painful, but he has acted to ensure that trapped travelers don't have to involuntarily participate in their neighbors' phone calls.

A 2013 proposal to allow cell phone calls during airplane flights will be thrown out by the Federal Communications Commission.

In 2013, Pai said Wheeler's proposal would likely require airlines to become commercial mobile radio station carriers to offer in-flight calling.

"I stand with airline pilots, flight attendants, and America's flying public against the FCC's ill-conceived 2013 plan to allow people to make cell phone calls on planes", Pai said a statement.

The public was more open to the idea of allowing other forms of communication, including text and data services. Fortunately for the people that agree that in-flight calls could be irritating, it looks like the FCC won't be allowing them any time soon.

At the time the proposal was introduced, the FCC said that it was technical in nature, as it would be left up to each airline to make the decision. The agency also sought comment on whether it should ban all voice calls on all USA flights.

Still, the 2013 initiative sparked protests from groups representing flight attendants, and members of Congress who objected to allowing voice calls on flights.
