At least World No.79 Thompson opened up a little more after snaring his third Davis Cup win in as many attempts, after his two straight-sets victories in February's first round against the Czech Republic.

6-3, 6-4 victory over Querrey to give the Aussies a 3-1 lead.

Cherrybrook's Jordan Thompson celebrates winning a point against the US' Jack Sock in the opening rubber Davis Cup quarter-final in Brisbane.

It is just the second time in the last 11 years Australia have made this stage of the competition, with a trip to Belgium or a home semifinal tie against Italy to come in September.

The victor of the quarterfinal will play Italy or Belgium in September.

Sam Groth and John Peers then took to the court on Saturday looking to wrap up the tie but were edged out in a hard-fought encounter with Steve Johnson and Jack Sock, 3-6 6-3 6-2 2-6 6-3.

Lacking his opponent's court speed, Isner swung for the fences and scrapped to within two points of forcing another set, but two fierce returns off the Australian's racket stole the momentum and set up Kyrgios for his match-winning 20th ace.

"There were a lot of emotions, a lot of ebbs and flows, and the crowd were great again", Kyrgios said.

"I don't really get too nervous, I don't get wound up too badly". He's always there. He's given me so much support, I can't say enough. I played well on clay previous year, had a couple of good results. "He is a proven player and I knew it was going to be tough", Kyrgios said.

Querrey was supposed to be Johnson's doubles partner, but American captain Jim Courier, who said it would take "monstrous effort" for the Americans to win the tie, pulled a swap, putting Sock into doubles and allowing Querrey to be fresh for Kyrgios. "Playing for your country, there's no bigger honor in tennis".

However, Kyrgios produced another commanding performance and showed more signs of his newfound ability to produce under pressure, breaking Querrey twice, after the American led 4-1, as he attempted a comeback in the third set. In the third, Isner saved a match point serving at 5-6 and lost the last three points again.

Goffin, who defeated Andreas Seppi 6-4 6-3 6-3 on Friday, has won 13 of his last 14 Davis Cup singles rubbers.

Pouille, the world number 17 and his team's top singles player in the absence of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils, swept the breaker before dominating the decider.
