Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina ahead of delegation-level bilateral talks here on Saturday.

The New Delhi Municipal Council approved its renaming a day before Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had arrived on a four-day visit to India.

Calling the defense pact a feather in India's cap, Sukh Deo Muni, a South Asia expert at New Delhi's Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses, said,"India does not want China to consolidate defense ties just next to its belly, that is true".

Referring to his famous slogan "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" (eveybody's cooperation, everybody's development), Modi said it is not just restricted to India but also to the neighbouring countries as devlopment of India is incomplete without the progress of the region.

'We are committed to expand our relationship with India, ' said Hasina. "Our doors are open for cooperation, but for this terrorism has to be shunned", he added.

"There is one thought in South Asia which breeds, inspires and encourages terrorism". A mindset that promotes terrorism, which has a value system which is not based on humanity, but on violence and extremism.

Politically, Hasina can not accept such a solution, Bangladesh officials said, because it would amount to accepting defeat on the Teesta pact.

"The main aim is to spread terrorism". We are a long-standing and trusted development partner of Bangladesh, ' Modi said at a press briefing. "We in India rejoice in our ties with Bangladesh". Modi also underlined the importance of connectivity between the two countries while inaugurating the Kolkata-Khulna-Dhaka bus service. "This nation has attained commendable development in the areas of economy, education, science, technology and innovations in the recent years", the Bangladesh Prime Minister said.

But both Indian and Bangladeshi diplomats said they viewed Mamata's comments as a bargaining posture. "I appreciate naming a road after Bangabandhu Rahman", Hasina said.

The statement was a clear reference to the 1971 war when India had intervened between East Pakistan and West Pakistan, ultimately leading to the formation of Bangladesh.

She said her Indian counterpart was receptive to the issue of Bangladesh's growing trade deficit with his country and assured her of his government's concrete steps to address the issue.

They also met the kin of soldiers who lost their lives in the war to liberate Bangladesh in 1971. PM Modi announced a special medical scheme under which 100 "Muktijoddhas" (warriors of the liberation war) of Bangladesh will be provided medical treatment in Indian hospitals every year.
