Trump touts 'tremendous progress' with Chinese President Xi Jinping

Garry Little | 08 April, 2017, 01:31

President Trump said Friday that he has "made tremendous progress" during his first in-person talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

And trade might be at the top of the list, with Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross joining Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Xi and Peng will also attend a welcome banquet hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang told a press conference on March 31.

Chinese state media say U.S. President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from his Chinese counterpart to visit China later this year.

The president has said that if China doesn't exert more pressure on North Korea, the US will act alone.

"It's going to be very interesting".

"We have been treated unfairly and have made awful trade deals with China for many, many years. They have the major leverage", Richardson said in an interview with "Closing Bell". It is created to thwart a nuclear strike by North Korea or Iran. "We're going to see what happens".

"The meeting will be of great significance to charting China-US relationship in a new era and advancing the development of bilateral ties.and promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large", Zheng said.

"I think China will be stepping up", Trump told reporters traveling with him Thursday aboard Air Force One ahead of the meetings.

Within Mr Trump's administration, there are still divisions over how to approach China.

Ahead of the dinner, Trump said he and Xi already had had a long discussion and had "developed a friendship", and then joked, "I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing".

However, Richardson pointed out that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is unpredictable, has nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, and doesn't seem interested in having a dialogue. A series of United Nations sanctions against North Korea have not deterred it from a string of missile tests, the latest this week.

China supplies North Korea with nearly all its fuel oil, imported foods, consumer goods and the raw materials used to construct its weapons program.

"I think it's great (that) he comes to the US and sees how people live and maybe take something positive back with him", one person said.

Trump and Xi are expected to continue discussing the North Korean nuclear threat and trade, among other things, officials said.

"President Trump needs to come away from the meeting with concrete deliverables that will restore production and employment here in the U.S.in those sectors that have been ravaged by China's predatory and protectionist practices", said Holly Hart, legislative director for the United Steelworkers union.

The Trump administration has shown increasing impatience with the North, with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson openly mentioning the possibility of using military options during a trip to South Korea last month.

The summit will also be watched closely as to whether the U.S. stands up to China for bullying South Korea for hosting the U.S. THAAD missile defense system created to defend better against ever-growing missile threats from North Korea.

Just days before the meetings, a bipartisan group of 26 US senators sent a joint letter urging Trump to use the summit with Xi to bring an end to Beijing's retaliatory measures in an attempt to pressure Seoul to scrap the decision to have a THAAD battery.
