Stating that Supreme Court's ban on sale of liquor along the state and national highways will have a similar impact which Goa witnessed in 2012 after mining ban, Leader of Opposition Chandrakant "Babu" Kavlekar on Wednesday demanded Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government to move forward with a review petition in the Supreme Court without any further delay.

According to the statistics collected from the state government, there are around 5,600 liquor shops in and around the state and national highways in West Bengal.

Officials did not even care to verify whether the hotels were located within 500 metres of a highway before ordering them to stop serving liquor, he alleged.

Meanwhile, in Pilibhit, UP Irrigation minister Dharampal extended his support to the protests against the operation of liquor vends in populated areas of the villages.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday warned that those protesting against shifting of liquor shops from taking law into their hands.

Since the order pertains to only those within 500 metres of state and national highways, establishments along the Old Delhi Gurgaon Road will escape the ban.

The court has given the above order in response to the petition filed by bar owners against Excise department's action of closing down bars along roads not notified as highways by the government.

Not only Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, Punjab government has also went on to denotify 12 highways to bypass Sc's order.

Director General of UP Police Javeed Ahmed in a statement today said that instructions have been issued to police to ensure that stringent action is initiated against people who vandalise liquor shops, indulge in stone pelting and setting the liquor outlets ablaze. Of this 112 accused persons have been arrested, the statement said.
