Google Fact Check Helps Identify Fake News, Now Available In Search

Google expands fact checking effort to all searches worldwide Google's fact check feature goes global and comes to Google Search

So basically, Google Fact Check is not itself fake news.

The fact check tag for Google News was introduced last October in the us and United Kingdom, a few weeks before the presidential election between President Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Google warns that the fact check label won't appear for every possible conspiracy or insane news story you can think of. "The snippet will display information on the claim, who made the claim, and the fact check of that particular claim", Google said in an official blog post announcing the new feature.

And on Google News, articles that have been checked for facts will be labelled "Fact Check".

"Asking companies like Google and Facebook to think about these problems and do what they can to address them is a start, because designing to help people make good judgments should be a basic consideration in the design of all information systems", says Forte.

Pulling information from PolitiFact, a website dedicated to fact-checking USA politics, as well Snopes, another fact-checking website, this time dedicated to debunking urban legends, the company will now display information on whether something a website or news piece claims is accurate.

It'll be interesting to see how this feature evolves, or if it has any effect on fake news in the first place. Hopefully Google is prepared to identify and remove alternative fact peddlers that claim to be fact checkers themselves as this tool continues to grow, otherwise it's unlikely to be considered a trusted method of quickly confirming authenticity for very long.

Again, Snopes is the fact-check source saying that the claim is a mixture of true and false.

The information made available are not Google's own, the blogpost says, adding that it will help people make more informed judgements.

In the latest move, the information will appear in a box or card, similar to how Google serves recipes.

However, articles that have been given a failing grade will still appear in search results, Google added, in a nod to tech's typically hands-off approach when it comes to establishing veracity of online news.

People who search for a topic in Google's main search engine or the Google News section will see a conclusion such as "mostly true" or "false" next to stories that have been fact checked.

Google claims it is now working with 115 fact-checking organizations to source fact check data.

Second, publishers will only be included if they are algorithmically determined to be an authoritative source of information.
