The air strikes also wounded more than 60 people in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in rebel-held Idlib, the Observatory said.

"I call on the global community to fulfill its obligation from 2013 to fully and finally remove these disgusting weapons from Syria", Netanyahu said during the annual state memorial ceremony for President Chaim Herzog.

Suspected chemical attacks have killed at least 100 people in Syria's rebel-held northwestern province of Idlib and left another 400 suffering from respiratory problems, a Syria medical relief group says.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that the chemical attack is "reprehensible and can not be ignored by the civilized world".

United Nations ambassadors have also condemned the attack, calling for a meeting of the Security Council to discuss a formal investigation.

Syria joined the convention and gave up its chemical weapons program in 2013 after a chemical weapons attack, likely carried out by government forces, killed hundreds in a suburb of Damascus.

Western states said the Syrian government was responsible for that attack, but Damascus blamed rebels.

Photos and video emerging from Khan Sheikhoun, which lies south of the provincial capital of Idlib, showed the limp bodies of children and adults.

It was not immediately clear whether the victims died of suffocation or wounds sustained from airstrikes.

Over the past year, Doctors Without Borders has received reports of at least 71 attacks on at least 32 different health facilities, which it runs or supports in Syria. The previous two were reported in Hama province, in an area not far from Khan Sheikhoun.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday that the secretary's comments "speak to the political realities of the situation in Syria" but said that Assad's exit as leader is "in the best interest of the Syrian people".

We review key developments related to Syria, including a suspected gas attack that killed at least 35 people in Idlib, 22 killed in government airstrikes outside the capital and global donors in Brussels saying a political solution is necessary. Faced with worldwide outrage over that attack, Assad agreed to a Russia-sponsored deal to destroy his chemical arsenal.

Those weapons have been destroyed, but member states of the OPCW have repeatedly questioned whether Assad declared everything in 2013.

Both Trump and Tillerson referred in written statements to a chemical weapons attack, rather than a suspected attack, suggesting the US has reached some degree of confidence about what took place in Idlib.

The suspected Syrian government chemical attack on Tuesday killed at least 58 people, including 11 children, but a Syrian military source denied the army had used any such weapons.

They said more than 160 people were receiving medical treatment and that many of them were in serious condition.

When he reached the scene, there was no smell, he said. "If they got the hospital we can treat them".

Witnesses said toxic gas had been delivered by a government airstrike. "At the moment we see access is very, very limited, which is unacceptable".
