Apple is working on an entirely new Mac Pro. Yes, really

Apple Will Ship A Pro iMac Later This Year Apple's most powerful computer is getting a major overhaul, but it won't be ready until 2018 (AAPL)

Apple wants to try and restore "modularity" and upgradeability to its Mac Pro lineup, so we can expect yet another Mac Pro shakeup in 2018. Looks like Apple has plans to revamp the Mac Pro and is looking to give the desktop PC a new lease of life.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Apple's SVP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller claims the company is "completely rethinking the Mac Pro' following the last update, which was back in 2013".

During an equally rare roundtable interview with members of the press, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineer, Craig Federighi, said: "We designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will.[and] it became fairly hard to adjust [to allow for more powerful processors emitting more heat]".

Apple also said during a roundtable with journalists in the U.S. that it was "sorry" to Mac Pro users who may have felt neglected, with the desktop having not been updated since its launch in 2013.

Apple will also be developing its own display to go alongside the new Mac Pro set to arrive next year. And later this year we'll see improved iMacs that Apple feels will appeal to a segment of Pro users, as well.

Wonders never cease. Apple, normally secretive to a fault and allergic to talking about future products before it considers them ready, summoned a small group of journalists from outlets including TechCrunch and Mashable to its headquarters earlier this month to tell them that the Mac Pro will once again be completely redesigned. It moves from a 3.7 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 CPU to a 3.5 GHz 6-core Xeon E5 and from dual AMD FirePro D300 graphics processors with 2 GB of VRAM to dual AMD D500 graphics processors with 3 GB of VRAM.

The refresh was stuffed inside of bigger news that Apple is planning huge upgrades for the iMac and Mac Pro.

Over the years, Apple has earned a reputation for abandoning professional users, the graphic artists, video producers, and programmers that rely on top-notch hardware to get work done. The execs also reiterated that they don't want to add touchscreens to Macs, something pros have grown to love on Windows machines. Speaking about the old Mac Pro, Terns said: "It served its goal well". The complaints have been scathing: it isn't just that people take issue with the MacBook Pro, its that pro users feel altogether rejected by Apple. Nvidia and AMD however have persisted in prioritising single GPU performance, leaving the Mac Pro (and many rather disgruntled users) without an upgrade path.

Yet that Mac Pro has become an outsized headache for Apple, which hasn't updated it almost as much as it should have, and its users, who can't upgrade it easily themselves. "We designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner".
